We’re working to build a fairer housing system that supports young people to not only find a place to call home, but to build a strong and thriving future.
Key initiatives
Youth foyers
We’re delivering youth foyers across Queensland to give young people access to stable housing in a supported living environment.
Support for young parents
Housing and homelessness support for young parents and young pregnant women aged 16 to 25 who are experiencing housing difficulties or are at risk of homelessness.
Help for low-deposit first home buyers
Through the new Boost to Buy scheme, eligible first home buyers with a deposit of just 2% can now access a government equity contribution of up to 30% to purchase a home of up to $1 million.
Help for young people moving to independent living
Youth Housing Essentials helps young people with the cost of moving from government services to independent living.
Young Queenslanders Sentiment Report findings
The Young Queenslanders Sentiment Report 2024-25 highlights that nearly 1 in 5 young Queenslanders expressed significant concerns about housing.
Young people described it as unaffordable and inaccessible and many doubted they would ever own a home.
Young Queenslanders in the report shared their interest in seeing an increase in:
- social and affordable housing
- housing solutions co-designed with communities, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- policy changes and subsidies to reduce housing and rental costs
- more emergency and safe housing for people experiencing domestic and family violence.
Support for youth accessing housing and homelessness services
We offer a range of services for youth at risk of homelessness or facing housing insecurity, and we want young people to know how to access them.
That’s why we’re equipping businesses, government and community services with the information they need to connect young people to the right support.
We’re also improving early access to housing and homelessness services by developing and promoting accessible resources for young people and their support networks. These resources will help them:
- access the right support
- build skills to find and keep their home
- plan pathways to home ownership.
Supporting first home buyers
Our support for first home buyers is helping ease costs and reduce the deposit gap, so more young people can achieve their home ownership aspirations.
These measures include:
- help for low-deposit first home buyers
- abolishing stamp duty on new builds
- lifting rental restrictions for new homeowners.
We’re also working with the Australian Government to support home ownership in Queensland, including enabling the Help to Buy shared equity program and 5% deposits for first home buyers.
We know that initiatives that increase demand alone will not achieve our home ownership goals. That’s why we are focussed on boosting housing supply—the most effective way to improve housing availability and affordability and help more Queenslanders into their own homes.
